Root development in grass

What happens to grass growth on our lawns throughout the year in the UK?

We have all seen what happens above the ground as the season's progress but we don’t get the opportunity to see what happens below the surface.

Usually, the grass is dormant at the beginning of the year as the air temperature and the soil temperature is low.

As these temperatures increase then you will see the grass grow in the springtime.

It is often the time of year when most of the biomass is generated.   However, as the temperatures continue to climb the grass growth will slow as it responds to higher levels of UV stress.

Once the summer is over, typically, the temperatures drop again and the grass starts to grow preparing itself for the winter to come.

Eventually, the plants will re-enter the dormant phase for the winter and ready to start the process all over again when the springtime comes back around.

But let’s have a look at what is happening in the soil.

The more observant of you will notice that the root growth and development is out of sequence with the grass leaf growth.

In order to support the swift leaf growth in the spring, it is important to have a root system in place first.   So, the application of Healthy Garden Biostimulants throughout the year in order to stimulate this important root development is an extremely useful tool to support strong lawn development.
