January Gardening Tips

Whilst it’s still the middle of winter, it’s never too early to start with those resolutions and plan for the coming gardening year.

Top jobs for this month:

• Shred your Christmas tree so it can be used for mulch
• Clean post and greenhouses ready for the spring
• Prune apple and pear trees
• Look ahead and plan what veg you might want to grow this season

For many, we’ll want to be sheltering inside from the British winter weather, so it’s also a nice touch to put out food and water for hungry birds, meaning you can enjoy watching these winged visitors from the comfort of your home.

Try making a fat cake to encourage them back and to keep them happy and fed during the cold months. We like to use this recipe from the National Trust.

And it makes for a great activity to do with children. All you need are:

• Yoghurt pots and string
• Lard or suet
• Bird seed
• Peanuts
• Cheese
• Raisins
• Leftovers such as oats, bread or cake
